Facebook Switches Counsel in Power Ventures Lawsuit
Facebook and Power.com are battling it out in the Northern District of California in a case that raises some interesting issues around ownership of and control over user data. (Previous posts here and here.)
Seattle-based Perkins Coie represented Facebook in this dispute, but Orrick will be taking over. Access the substitution of counsel filing here: [pdf]. Both firms have represented Facebook in litigation. There are many different reasons for a change of counsel, and I would not draw any conclusions from this. Why am I mentioning it? Good question. It seems like inside baseball to me, but others may find it interesting.
On a related note, EFF-affiliated Jason Shultz has an interesting post at LawGeek that talks about this case, and telegraphs some of the counterclaims brought by Power Ventures: ("Facebook v. Power Ventures: Fair Use, Misuse, and the fight for access to user-generated data"). It's well worth the read, as they say.
