Microsoft and Washington AG Unleash on Scareware Vendors

Joel Hruska has a good initial rundown here on the latest wave of lawsuits filed by Redmond and the Washington AG's Office.

Products that make you think you have issues with Windows?  Who in their right mind would fall for such a scam?

I'm curious as to the effect of a government agency closely coordinating an enforcement action with a private actor.  There's absolutely nothing wrong with this, and it seems to happen often in other contexts.  But this has to complicate the litigation somehow.

It seems like the Washington statute is used most often against actors who have serious baggage.  As a result, it's sort of a quiet (but effective) enforcement mechanism that never really sees the light of day.

(NB:  Washington AG's press release here, which mentions that the Computer Spyware Act was recently "improved.")
