A Simple Google Search Can Lead You Astray

Alex E. at Sunbelt has a post about malware redirects on simple google searches.  Say, for example, you are trying to configure your wireless booster.  You do a search for "configure" and "booster" and end up with a bunch of sites, some of which look like comments or message board posts.  Should you click on those sites - even the top 10 - willy nilly?  Probably not.

Some of those (even top 10) search results could be malicious sites, which attempt to have malware installed on your machine.

This got me thinking about Google's potential liability for this.  At some point, they must have an obligation to screen out sites which hoist malware on unsuspecting surfers?  They talked about this and flagged problematic sites for a while.  What's odd is how a site can end up in the top 10 and be malware infecting.  I always thought "top 10" was a tough barrier to break on Google.

On the liability front I would imagine it presents a classic Section 230 issue.
